CBO is working to develop a decision-support and coastal protection system to address the massive influx of Sargassum (invasive algae) normally found in Caribbean oceans. Sargassum is a type of algae that provides an environment for distinctive and specialized marine life, but the abundance of the algae threatens marine fauna and tourism, and could result in long-term cause coastal dead zones.

The research team will collaborate with tourism and government agencies to design an inter-institutional coastal protection system to anticipate trade-offs of potential response pathways. The project will use scenario analysis, agent-based and optimization modeling, and design thinking to develop new systems.
