Hugh Hanson Seminar: Mapping Evidence for Impacts of Conservation on Human Well-Being

Samantha H. Cheng

  • National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Science for Nature and People Partnership

International policy initiatives and conservation organizations have sought to emphasize and strengthen the link between the conservation of natural ecosystems and human development. To enable efficient, defensible and targeted decisions and investment in improving human well-being in conservation, we need rigorous and comprehensive evidence. However, the strength of evidence to support these efforts is still scattered, inconsistent and inaccessible.

To address this gap, Samantha and her team produced a map of 1000+ relevant studies linking conservation interventions to human well-being. During the presentation, we will discuss the value of the systematic map as a decision support tool for rapidly locating data on policy impacts and targeting knowledge gaps to guide future research efforts. We will also discuss how to interpret the map, key findings, and ways to explore it.
