Universities emit 3 percent of the country's carbon footprint, but they produce 100 percent of the student footprint. That's why ASU will mitigate 100 percent of its carbon dioxide emissions related to energy by 2025, and all transportation emissions by 2035.

With about 300 sunny days per year, Arizona is a great place to take advantage of solar power. ASU's photovoltaic installations are one of the largest commitments to solar energy by a university in the United States.

The list of what can be recycled varies by campus, but Sun Devils can recycle plastic, aluminum, paper, and cardboard everywhere. The university also recycles electronics, toner and ink cartridges, batteries, cell phones, and even shoes.

Since 2005, all new university-owned buildings are required to be certified LEED Silver or better. Green buildings reduce negative environmental impacts and operating costs and increase worker (and student) productivity.

ASU diverts an average of 14 tons of landscaping waste a month from the waste stream to a local farm for composting. The university purchases the compost for use on campus landscapes, replacing nitrogen-rich fertilizers.

In 2008, almost 22 percent of food purchased by ASU came from within 150 miles. ASU Dining also serves campus-grown foods harvested by volunteers, offers trayless dining in some facilities, and practices reduced-waste catering.

ASU subsidizes bus and light rail passes, offers car-sharing, and has a carpool program with special parking privileges. A student-run bicycle co-op offers low- or no-cost bike repairs, free bike rentals, and discounted biking supplies.

The Print and Imaging Lab, where graphic and printing students practice their trade and assist ASU with print work, uses 100 percent recycled paper for all productions, including business cards, letterhead, envelopes, notepads and cards.
